Life in Britain has been shaped, from its beginning, by strong personalities and people of character. Not all of them have been British, some were not even real, but all have played a part in the making of the history, legend and literature of the British Isles. It has been said that Britain's great influence in the world has been vastly disproportionate to her relatively small size and that she has produced more notable people, in every area of human activity, than any other country.
