Born in Northern Ireland, First Earl Alexander of Tunis was a military leader during World War II. He was in charge of the retreat from Dunkerque. He was also in command of General Montgomery's victory at El Alemein over Rommel's Afrika Korps in 1942. At the end of the war, Alexander was the supreme Allied commander in the Mediterranean. After the war he went on to become governor general of Canada (1946-52) and British minister of defence (1952-1954).
