Born Francis Charles Augustus Albert Emmanuel, he married his cousin, Queen Victoria of Great Britain, in 1840 to become prince consort. Born in Germany, the son of Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Albert was educated in Brussels and Bonn. He met Victoria when he was 17 and married her at age 20.

Prince Albert spent his time supporting the fine arts in Britain - particularly through the Great Exhibition of 1851 - and studying politics until 1847 when he was appointed as chancellor of Cambridge University. His ideas on education were adopted at Cambridge and later at Oxford.

Albert was always a great support to Queen Victoria in her work, but never held any direct role in government. She was devastated when he died of Typhoid at an early age. The Royal Albert Hall and the Natural History and Science Museums in South Kensington (Middlesex), as well as the superb Albert Memorial, are fitting monuments to hs memory.
